The Three R’s used to refer to Reading, Writing and Arithmetic but are now better know as Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. But there is a new interloper in town – Carbon Reduction – and it’s getting a lot of traction. Does this mean that we should forget about the three R’s and head in a different direction in order to reach our environmental goals and more importantly, which is more beneficial?
Currently Carbon is King in as much as less is definitely more. Taking steps to lower greenhouse gas emissions directly addresses global warming and in turn the frequency and severity of its consequences. But for many, taking steps towards lowering carbon emissions is a long, and potentially costly, exercise – particularly for small businesses. So how can this be achieved cost effectively?
Eco foil, also known as eco-friendly foil or sustainable foil, refers to a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional foil used in various applications, including greeting cards.
Traditional foil is typically made from metallic materials, such as aluminium, and often involves resource-intensive and environmentally harmful processes.
Eco foil, on the other hand, is produced using sustainable materials or methods that have a reduced impact on the environment.
However, there remains a misconception that items that have had foil applied cannot enter the recycling stream. However, paper or board with foil applied to it can be re-pulped and therefore recycled. Similarly, paper or board with foil applied can be composted under commercial conditions.

We’ve been championing Eco print for a long time!
When we launched our online eco-print platform in 2006 we were the only UK printer offing a 100% eco-printing option. As such we were called upon by the paper merchants and ink manufacturers to trial and test their products and consequently we were the first print company in the UK to switch to vegetable-oil based inks and to run all of our products on 100% recycled paper.

Did you know that our eco-toners are Certified Food Safe?
Following a rigorous testing process the eco-toners developed by Ricoh, and which are used on our digital press base, have been awarded a Smithers Pira Certificate of Conformity assuring EU food packaging legislation compliance.
The toners comply with EU and FDA legislation for food packaging intended for all food types when used behind a functional barrier. No significant migration or set-off was observed and a risk assessment for Non Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS) associated with the toners was in compliance.
As an eco-friendly printer, the materials and consumables we use must be environmentally friendly whilst able to perform to the highest standards. Offering a wide range of digitally printed packaging products on choice of smooth and textured papers means that our toners must be able to perform to a high quality, combined with eco desires and safety considerations. The Food Safe Certification for our toners and digital printing allows us the confidence to promote short run, quality packaging to a much bigger audience.
